EDUCATION SYSTEM

tour

QUALITY ASSURANCE :

To ensure that both the Government and individuals are investing in quality education, training and assessment, the Government has set up nationally recognised processes of quality assurance. There are a number of government appointed bodies responsible for approving qualifications in New Zealand and for the quality that determines the delivery of qualifications. These bodies are :

New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA)
responsible for approving and registering all courses and national qualifications offered at polytechnics and private training establishments.

New Zealand Vice-Chancellor's Committee (NZVCC)
responsible for approving all diplomas, undergraduate and graduate programmes offered by New Zealand universities.

UNIVERSITIES IN NEW ZEALAND :

University education was established in New Zealand in 1870 and has a similar tradition to the British university system. There are eight state-funded universities in New Zealand, all of them internationally respected for their academic and research performance: In addition to a centrally co-ordinated system of quality assurance audits at both institution and programme level, each university undertakes internal quality checks. All New Zealand universities offer a broad range of subjects in Arts, Commerce and Science. Each has developed its own specialist subjects such as Medicine, Engineering, Veterinary Science. Computer Studies, Agriculture and Environmental Studies, Sports-Science, Biotechnology, Architecture etc. Bachelor's Masters and Doctoral degrees are offered by all New Zealand universities. A range of under graduate and postgraduate diplomas is also available, along with honours programmes (usually requiring an additional year of Study).

POLYTECHNICS IN NEW ZEALAND :

New Zealand Polytechnics, and Institutes of Technology, are state funded and provide education and training at all levels ranging from introductory studies through to full degree programmes. A few of them offer PG programmes as well. Polytechnics and Institutes of Technology are efficient tertiary providers offering programmes which can be both academically and vocationally focused. Due to their active engagement with industry, employers and government agencies they provide programmes which are of a high academic standard and are relevant to the rapidly changing workforce on a global basis. Polytechnics offer diverse courses like Arts and Design, Travel & Tourism, Hospitality etc.

PRIVATE DEGREE PROVIDERS :

In 1989, amendments to the Education Act in New Zealand enabled the private tertiary sector to award degrees through the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). The key to the legitimacy of the private degree providers is their relationship with the NZQA which has responsibility for course accreditation. The mission of the private degree providers is to provide a quality service to their students and range of skills of value in the work environment.

PRIVATE TRAINING PROVIDERS (PTEs) :

Private training establishments are registered and their courses approved by NZQA. Institutions and schools in this sector provide a range of courses including English language, aviation flight training, air traffic control, English, business computing, dance, design and arts, religious studies, travel and tourism and training for the hospitality industry.

UNDERGRADUATE Study IN NEW ZEALAND :

At most New Zealand universities the course of Study for a bachelor's degree consists of a prescribed number of unit, papers or courses. In each subject there are usually first-year (stage 1 or 100 - level), second year (stage 2 or 200 level) and third-year (stage 3 or 300 level) courses. A second year course may be commenced only after prescribed passes in the subject at stage 1 and a third-year course only after required passes in the subject at stage 2. In each subject the student is required to attend a given number of lectures, tutorials and/or laboratory periods per week. In some courses field trips provide opportunities for on-site Study of natural phenomena or social processes. These learning contacts are supplemented by personal reading and research. Students are expected to develop independent Study skills with a minimum of processes. These learning contacts are supplemented by personal reading and research. Students are expected to develop independent Study skills with a minimum of professional supervision. Grades gives in tests, assignments and practical work count towards the final grade for a course. Most courses have a final written examination held either at mid-year (J) or the end of the academic year (October/November).

POST GRADUATE Study IN NEW ZEALAND :

The first degree a student is able to gain in New Zealand is as elsewhere, a Bachelors degree. With a completed Bachelor's degree, a graduate may be able to go on to a Masters degree. These degrees may be awarded with Honours, an indication both of the challenge the course presents and of the student's achievement in it.

Postgraduate Diploma :

A one-years full-time Study, designed for graduates, which builds on the subject matter in the academic field of the previous degree.

Graduate Diploma :

A one-year, full-time course of Study for graduates. It does not always require its students to have prior learning or experience in the subject matter of the diploma.

Master's Degree :

The Master's degree is open to those who have completed a Bachelors degree. The course of Study is usually of one or two year's full-time Study or its equivalent in part-time Study. The work required normally builds upon the prior knowledge gained in the major part of the Bachelor's degree, and most or all of it is in that discipline. It is at a more advanced level. That is normally reflected in the content of the work; in the mode of teaching which is likely to emphasise seminar presentation; and in provision of research experience for the candidate. A thesis component, and in some cases, particularly those which are taken after a four-year Bachelor (Honours) course, the degrees may be thesis-only. However increasingly Master's degrees by papers, or papers plus research, are becoming available. The successful student is expected to show, as the title implies, a real grasp of the subject, demonstrated by an understanding of the discipline, a capacity to reflect upon it, and an ability to undertake research into it.

FAQ's

How much are the fees and what is the refund policy?
Fees are determined by the individual institution concerned. One year's fees (or the total fee for courses of less than one year) must be paid before a visa will be issued or a permit extended if a further course is to be undertaken for students Studying at tertiary level. Fees must be paid in internationally acceptable, convertible currency. An institution may refund fees to a student who withdraws from a course. The refund must not exceed the difference between the total amount paid and the cost of the course up to the time of withdrawal. Private training establishments must provided every prospective student with a written statement of the total course cost and other financial commitments associated with each course of Study or training before accepting that student's enrolment. Students enrolled for courses of Study or training before accepting that student's enrolment. Students enrolled for courses of Study or training at a private training establishment may withdraw from the course at any time within seven days after the first day of the course and receive a partial fee refund.

What are the Accommodation Arrangements?
A written guarantee of accommodation is required before a student visa can be granted. Some institutions may be able to arrange residential accommodation for students who are not staying with relatives or friends. However, you may wish to arrange accommodation for yourself. You should indicate whether or not you want assistance in finding accommodation when you apply to the institution.

Are dependents allowed to come along?
Your dependants, who may include a spouse, de facto spouse, fiance(e), and children, may accompany you to New Zealand or join you later. They must apply for and meet the normal requirements for the type of visa requested (visitor, work, or student). School aged dependants will be required to pay full fees for enrolment in primary and secondary courses of Study. I have got a student visa and my spouse wants to accompany me to New Zealand. Can he / she apply for a work visa? Your spouse can apply for a work visa only if you are doing a post graduate course in NZ or you are Studying a course towards qualifications in Long term Skill Shortage List.

Can I transfer to another institution?
If you wish to transfer to another course or institution, you must apply to the New Zealand Immigration Service to obtain a variation to your student permit, specifying the course and institution and, if appropriate, the extended validity of the permit. Note : The New Zealand Immigration Service will revoke a student permit if an international student withdraws from a course of Study at an institution.

Can I change course of Study in New Zealand after few weeks of my arrival?
You may jeopardise your immigration status in New Zealand as you were originally granted a student visa to Study a particular course. Any request for a change of course of Study would mean a re-assessment of your application.

Can I work while Studying?
Some formal courses of Study include a requirement to complete up to three years course-related work experience. The training provider will try to help you find suitable employment. There is some flexibility on how this employment may be obtained, e.g. suitable post-education work or the possibility of doing the work experience in your home country (under qualified supervision). Students undertaking a full time diploma or degree course that takes at least two academic years to complete, and students undertaking a full-time course of Study that would attract points under the General Skills category of Residence policy, may be allowed to work up to 20 hours per week. To do this you must request a 'Variation of Conditions' to your Study permit after beginning the course of Study. No application form or fee is required for this Variation of Conditions. If your student permit is for more than 12 months you may apply for a Variation of Conditions to work over the Christmas and New Year Holidays. No offer of employment is required. You will need to pay a Variation of Conditions fee. If you have completed a polytechnic or university qualification that has a minimum completion time of three years, you may apply for a work permit that allows you to work up to a maximum of two years. An offer of employment relevant to your qualifications is required. Further information on student visa applications can be obtained from the New Zealand Immigration website: www.immigration.gov.nz.

QWhen will I get my 6 month job search work permit?
You are eligible to apply for 6 month job search work permit within 3 months of the date of completion of your course in NZ that gets points under Skilled Migrant Category.

When would be my next visa status after job search visa?
If you get job offer in your relevant area of Study then your visa status could be converted to Work Permit or Permanent Residency on your Eligibility based on the Skilled Migrant Category at that time.
